August Macke's primary aim was to show life with its mysteries, secrets and beauty. He was deeply sceptical about reason as a predominant principle. His favourite subjects are people outside shop windows, in parks, in the street or in cafes. In Macke's pictures, there are no everyday tensions and social reality, the emphasis is on leisure and zets for life. Macke was born in 1887 and trained at the Dusseldorf Academy and with Lovis Corinth in Berlin. His first contracts as a painter were the sets and costumes for theatre play. In 1911, he joined the "Blauer Reiter".He was killed in war in 1914.
